If you enjoy spooky gothic vibes, medieval architecture, and fall foliage, all wrapped in a cozy, somewhat moody atmosphere, I’ve got the place for you: Brașov. Nestled in the Carpathians in Romania’s famous Transylvania region, Brașov offers the perfect fall escape, combining beautiful nature with old-world European charm.

Now, I know I may be slightly biased since I was born in Brașov and lived there until my early teens, but trust me when I say it’s one of Romania’s most beautiful cities. Moreover, it’s the perfect size for a weekend trip while still offering plenty of cool day trips, so you could even stay a week or more and still have things to do.

In autumn, Brașov is an ideal city break if you’re visiting from somewhere in Europe and want to skip the capitals and big cities. The small-town vibes, combined with a variety of activities, make it a lovely destination for all kinds of travelers. So let’s get into the details of visiting Brașov in autumn.

P.S. One of my first articles on this blog was about my top reasons to visit Brașov. You may want to check it out if you need some convincing.

Weather in Brașov in autumn

Brașov tends to be cooler than other Romanian cities nearly year-round. Being surrounded by mountains, it has cool shoulder seasons. Autumn can be unpredictable, with temperatures often dropping abruptly from one day to the next, then rising again.

September tends to be warmer, with summer-like temperatures most days. It does get cooler toward the end of the month, and nights are already chilly as early as late August. While the weather is ideal, the city can still be a little crowded, and the leaves may not have changed color yet.

In my opinion, October is the ideal month to visit Brasov. Going toward the end of the month also gives you a chance to see the foliage start to pop. Mornings and evenings are cold, but the days are typically pleasant and sunny.

November is by far the most challenging month. You may get lucky and enjoy cold, sunny days, but it may also rain a lot or even snow! Early November is still quite okay, and often when the foliage is at its peak. But later in the month is usually already winter weather.

No matter when you visit, dress in layers and bring an umbrella or raincoat. You’ll need fewer layers in September compared to November, but always bring warm clothes for mornings and evenings. Comfortable, warm shoes are a must, especially if you plan day trips to nearby mountains.

Best places to see fall colors in Brașov

Brașov has lots of trees, so you’ll have plenty of chances to see beautiful fall foliage. Keep in mind that autumn colors tend to pop around mid-October, though you may see some foliage a little earlier. So here are my favorite spots for fall foliage in Brașov.

  • Tâmpa Mountain: The forest-covered mountain in the middle of the city is the absolute best spot for fall foliage. You can walk the lovely promenade at the foot of the mountain, take the cable car up, or even hike if you’re in the mood for a workout.
  • Council Square & Old Town streets: While Old Town has few trees, Council Square offers one of the best views of Tâmpa rising behind the colorful medieval buildings. Many surrounding streets also offer glimpses of the mountain, so there are lots of great photo opps.
  • Schei neighborhood: One of my favorite neighborhoods in Brașov, Schei feels a bit like a village, with several parks and tree-lined streets to admire the foliage.
  • The Black and White Towers: Just a short walk from Council Square, a small hill features two medieval towers overlooking the Old Town. You can easily walk up to enjoy the view and stroll around the little park for more lovely foliage.
  • Nicolae Titulescu Park: This is the city’s main park, right next to the Old Town. Colorful flowerbeds cover the park in spring and summer, but in autumn it’s an ideal spot for beautiful foliage. Stroll around the park and sit on a bench to people-watch or read a book.

Best day trips for autumn foliage

While you can see incredible autumn foliage in Brașov, the surrounding area offers even more stunning views. These places are ideal for a day trip or, in some cases, even a half-day trip from the city center.

Poiana Brașov

This is the easiest half-day trip from Brașov. Poiana Brașov is a famous ski resort town, and it’s just a half-hour bus ride away. Hop on the bus at Livada Poștei and get off at the last stop. You can walk around the small town, admire the beautiful mountain landscape, and catch the cable car for spectacular views.

It’s always colder in Poiana Brașov than in central Brașov, so dress accordingly. I recommend going in the morning and staying for lunch at a local restaurant, like the charming Șura Dacilor. The bus ride costs 5RON for one way, so around 1€/1$.

Bușteni & Cantacuzino Castle

One of my favorite day trips from Brașov is to the mountain town of Bușteni, where you can visit Cantacuzino Castle, better known lately as the filming location of the Netflix show Wednesday. While the castle is the main attraction, I also love the views of the Bucegi Mountains.

Besides visiting the iconic Nevermore Academy (more on that in my Cantacuzino Castle guide), you can also take the cable car up to the mountains to hike or simply enjoy spectacular views of the surrounding valleys and mountains. Around October and early November, you can enjoy beautiful fall foliage!

Sinaia & Peleș Castle

Sinaia is another favorite of mine, and Peleș Castle is just one reason to visit. Most visitors go to Sinaia specifically for the castle, which is absolutely worth the visit, but they miss out on everything else the town has to offer.

Just a short drive or train ride from Bușteni, Sinaia is home to one of the most famous casinos of the 20th century, a monastery that gives the town its name, and more cable cars to reach various altitudes of the Bucegi Mountains. You can easily spend a full day here and still have things to do! I also have a dedicated article on how to spend a perfect day in Sinaia.

Râșnov Fortress

If you’re looking for a chill half-day trip from Brașov, Râșnov is a great option, only a 20-minute train ride away. The town is very small, with the hilltop fortress towering over it, visible from every angle. There aren’t many attractions in town, so after a walk around Republicii Street, you can head up to the fortress to enjoy the view.

Râșnov Fortress dates back to the early 13th century, when the Teutonic Knights built it as a castle. However, the oldest structures still standing date back to the 14th century. Unfortunately, the citadel is currently closed for renovation, but you can access the gardens. Catch the inclined elevator to reach the fortress or hike the short way up.

Bran Castle

Of course, I couldn’t leave Dracula’s Castle off this list! Roughly one hour from Brașov, Bran is a small town, yet it’s home to one of Europe’s most famous castles. Dracula’s Castle, as it’s popularly known, towers over the town from its perch atop a small cliff. Although the stories of its connection to Bram Stoker’s Dracula have long been debunked, the legendary castle still draws countless visitors.

Reaching Bran from Brașov is very easy. If you don’t have a car, you can just catch a bus from Autogara 2, also known as Autogara Bartolomeu. Prepare cash for the bus ticket, which is 15 RON for a one-way trip as of 2026 (around €2.80/$3.15). I have an article on visiting Bran Castle from Bucharest, but you’ll also find useful information about the castle itself.

Piatra Craiului National Park

Finally, if you want to spend a day hiking in the mountains around Brașov, Piatra Craiului National Park is one of the best options near the city. The gateway to the national park is the town of Zărnești, easily reached from Brașov by train in about 45 minutes.

There’s a small fee to explore the park, which you can pay either online on the national park’s website or at various points across the park. The Zărnești Gap, Dambovicioara Cave, and Piatra Craiului Scree are just a few spots worth checking out. If you plan to hike, remember to check weather conditions and visiting rules.

Things to do in Brașov in autumn

I’ve already included the best foliage spots and day trips, but what else can you do in Brașov? Besides walking around the charming old town and enjoying the view, there is plenty to do, even when the weather isn’t ideal for walking.

Cozy cafés

Plenty of cozy, charming little cafés let you hide from the cold or rain and enjoy a hot drink, preferably with a slice of cake. My favorite spot is Shakespeare Coffee & Poetry, but Sufra Coffee Shop and CH9 Specialty Coffee are also great.

Traditional restaurants

When in Romania, you must indulge in hearty, traditional food. Luckily, Brașov has lots of nice restaurants where you can not only sample some of the most popular Romanian dishes, but also enjoy traditional music and dance. Sergiana is one such place, where you’ll often find entertainment with your meal. For a more laid-back atmosphere, head to La Ceaun (on Michael Weiss Street) or Oaia Neagră.

Museums

While the big museums are mainly in Bucharest, we also have a few nice ones in Brașov. Muzeul de Artă Brașov showcases beautiful regional art, Muzeul de Etnografie focuses on the region’s textile history, and Casa Mureșenilor is a lovely house museum about a prominent local family. You must also visit the famous Black Church to admire its Gothic interior.

Seasonal events

October is usually full of events, especially around Halloween. As you know, Brașov is in Transylvania, the birthplace of Dracula (or so they say). Naturally, we have the Dracula Film Festival, the Halloween Market in Council Square, and also a Fall Market happening around mid-October. There are also special Halloween events in nearby Bran, aka Dracula’s Castle.

Here are the 2026 autumn events in Brașov:

  • Fall Market: October 16th-18th, Council Square. An artisans’ market selling all kinds of traditional food and handmade items.
  • Dracula Film Festival: October 15th-18th, Cinema Astra. A film contest dedicated to horror, thriller, science fiction, and fantasy movies.
  • Halloween Fest @ Piața Sfatului: October 30th-November 1st, Council Square. The three-day event includes an artisans market, Halloween costume parades, live music, dance exhibitions, and cool decorations.

Plus, if you’re planning a day trip to visit Dracula’s Castle, here are the events in Bran:

  • Caravana dovlecilor de Halloween @ Bran: October 16th-18th, Regina Maria Park, Bran. A Halloween-themed market with local delicacies, artisanal items, photo corners, music, and more.
  • Bran Castle – The Legend of Dracul: October 24th-November 1st, Bran Castle. You can choose between various entry tickets during the week leading up to Halloween. Plus, there’s a Halloween Party on October 31st.

Where to stay in Brașov

The best area to stay in Brașov as a visitor is around the Old Town, especially if you’re in town for a short time. All the main attractions are in or around the Old Town, so if you stay nearby, you won’t even need public transportation.

If you do need to travel farther, a bus fare is 5 RON (around 1€/1$), and you can buy tickets at machines at some bus stops or use contactless payment on board. Alternatively, both Uber and Bolt work really well in Brașov and are relatively affordable.

Also, in April 2026, the city launched Vinerea Verde (Green Friday), an emissions-reduction initiative that lets everyone use public transportation free of charge!

Other areas you may consider are Centrul Nou, Schei, and the area around the train station. I usually don’t like train station areas in most European cities, but in Brașov it’s actually pretty chill. Plus, you can easily hop on a train for day trips!
