Is Travel Medical Insurance Necessary?

I’ve been traveling nearly full-time for over two years now and extensively for the past decade. Now, I hope these won’t be the famous last words, but I never had any major medical or travel-related issues, although I had a few close calls. Like the time I got sick in Mexico or when I got injured while walking the Camino. They were minor issues that didn’t require hospitalization, but things could have gone worse, and I’m glad I was always prepared for it. I guess that’s why they didn’t get worse.

One thing I firmly believe in is that the one time you’re not prepared, something will happen. You know, like when you always carry an umbrella and it never rains, but the one time you forget it, it pours. That’s how I feel about having travel insurance. I still fail to carry an umbrella, but I never travel without insurance.

Another thing that I am always careful about when I travel is keeping my electronics safe. Since I carry my laptop wherever I go, I always half-jokingly say that my whole life is in there. Without my laptop, I couldn’t get my work done and keep traveling, so it’s not so much of an exaggeration.

Having electronic insurance gives me peace of mind. If anything were to happen to my laptop, I know I can get reimbursed for it. And since I always travel on a tight budget, that makes a huge difference!

Okay, now that I’ve told you why having travel insurance is important to me, let me tell you more about SafetyWing’s Nomad 2.0 Insurance. But before I move on, I want to make it clear that I partnered with SafetyWing, so I may receive a commission if you buy through the links in this article. This has no extra cost for you. I was familiar with SafetyWing before this partnership and I would recommend it regardless of any commission.

Nomad 2.0 is the newest version of SafetyWing’s Nomad Insurance and includes a few really cool new features that I’m excited about.

  • Adventure sports: you can get coverage for over 30 adventure sports, including scuba diving, quad biking, motorbiking, and more.

Cool Things about SafetyWing Nomad Insurance

  • You can buy insurance while you’re traveling. Yes, the great thing about SafetyWing is that you can buy insurance at any point of your trip. Coverage begins from the moment you buy your insurance.
  • You also get coverage in your home country. SafetyWing covers incidental visits home (meaning you’re not returning to get treatment) for 30 out of every 90 days (15 days for US residents).
  • The policy extends automatically. Every 28 days, your policy extends for the same period, so you never have to worry about ending up without coverage. It’s a stress-free process.
  • You can cancel at any time. If you won’t be traveling for a while, you can stop your auto-extension by logging into your account. The coverage stops at the end of your current period.
  • It’s affordable. Policies start from just over US$45 for 28 days. That’s just over US$1.5 per day. Add-ons have an additional cost, and the price varies depending on your age range.
  • Filing a claim is easy. You can do so on the web browser either on your laptop or your mobile device.
