As a nearly full-time traveler, my luggage is my best friend. Over the years, I tried multiple suitcases, backpacks, and everything in between. A few years ago, tired of hauling poorly made suitcases up hills and on uneven roads, I decided to switch to a backpack. And it has been a practical choice.
But here’s the thing. I only travel with a carry-on. That means hauling around a combination of a 40L backpack on my back, plus a small one in front. And I have to be honest: I’m tired of it. My back is certainly tired of it. So, when Level8 reached out with the proposal to try one of their suitcases, I took it as a sign!
I still had my doubts, so I did my research before even considering this opportunity. After reading about the brand, other consumers’ opinions, and the sustainability aspects, I was ready to ditch my beloved backpack in favor of this suitcase. Level8’s design philosophy aligned with the way I travel: minimal, purposeful, and reliable.
I chose the Luminous Textured Carry-On, so this review will be based on this model. Before we dive in, I want to make it clear that Level8 gifted me this suitcase, but this is my honest opinion after using it. I will tell you all the pros and cons, hopefully helping you decide if a Level8 suitcase could be a good choice for your adventures.

About Level8
Level8 is a New York–based company founded in 2008. Their mission is to “make travel less of a burden,” as stated on their website. They achieve this by offering sleek, minimalist luggage crafted from high-quality materials that seamlessly blend style and durability.
The brand focuses on innovation, product design, and user experience. The combination of aesthetics and functionality has earned Level8 several design awards, including Red Dot, iF, and IDEA. Furthermore, the brand is already trusted by tens of thousands of travelers worldwide, especially younger and style-conscious generations.
One statement caught my attention while browsing the Level8 website and researching the brand:
“More travel means more cultural connection. Today, we’re exposed to different cultures and ideas more than ever; however, we engage in culture the most when we travel. Creating deep connections when we live real moments, we become a holistic global community.”
This resonated with me and my approach to traveling and experiencing the world. The brand values, plus the high-quality products and stylish design, convinced me to give this brand a chance.

Level8 Luggage & Sustainability
One thing I look for when deciding to purchase travel gear, especially when investing in more costly purchases, is sustainability. Is the brand taking any steps to reduce waste and protect the planet?
I was happy to discover that Level8 strives to design products that respect the planet. The suitcases are built to last, with durable materials and high-quality designs, meaning you won’t have to buy a new one after a few trips. Plus, several styles also include eco-friendly linings made from recycled PET fabric.

One reason why I gave up suitcases in the past was that they had poor-quality wheels that broke after a few trips. Level8 cases feature 360° polyurethane wheels “tested to withstand 276,000 wheel rotations.” I haven’t used my suitcase that much, but I can tell you it just glides even on rougher surfaces. I’ll be sure to update this section after a few more trips and let you know if anything changes!
Lastly, the focus on sustainability is clear from the moment you receive the suitcase. It comes in a cardboard box, with no plastic packaging, and covered in a soft, white dust bag that you can use to store it at home when you’re not traveling.

Why I Chose the Luminous Textured Carry-On 20”
I was given a few different options, but the Luminous Textured Carry-On was an easy choice. I wanted a carry-on, lightweight suitcase that would fit in the overhead bins but also stand out on the baggage claim belt in case I need to check it.
The carry-on version comes in two sizes: 18” and 20”. The difference is minimal, but since both would fit the overhead bin, I figured having a little extra space could always come in handy, so I opted for the 20’’.
I also liked that, despite being a hard-shell suitcase, it only weighs 7.7lbs (3.5 kg). And I really like the square shape, not only aesthetically, but also because it gives just that tiny bit of extra space. When you only travel carry-on like me, every bit matters!
The color I chose is Olivine. It’s a beautiful, soft shade that stands out just enough to spot it easily anywhere. Plus, it’s not a color that you see that often. However, there were a few other beautiful colors that I considered, like navy or a classic black. They all look very sleek and elegant.

Pros of the Level8 Luminous Textured Carry-On
I’ve already mentioned some of the features that I love about this suitcase, but let’s do a recap:
- Premium feel at mid-range pricing: everything, from the shell texture to the wheels and interior, has a premium, high-quality feel.
- Lightweight but durable: I’ve only put it to the test on a couple of short trips, but the case is really light and feels sturdy.
- Glides smoothly: even when fully packed, it’s really easy to maneuver the case, plus the noise is minimal!
- Stylish minimalist look: I just really love how it looks, and the Olivine color is so pretty and unique!
- Cabin-friendly: I took this suitcase as carry-on with Wizzair, a company notoriously strict with its baggage policy, and nobody said a thing. Also, it fits perfectly in the overhead bin.
- Feels spacious: I have managed to pack everything I need for a 2-month trip to Asia that I’ll be embarking on soon.
- Lifetime warranty: all Level8 suitcases offer this warranty, covering functional aspects including shell, wheels, handles, and zippers.
- Free shipping to the U.S., Canada, and Europe: I received it after five days from the date of delivery!

Cons of the Level8 Luminous Textured Carry-On
Okay, you may think this all sounds too good to be true, right? Don’t I have anything negative to say? Honestly, so far I’m really satisfied with my suitcase! However, some features may be considered a downside, so here are my thoughts:
- Higher price point: Level8 suitcases are more expensive than other brands. This particular model is $169,99 (though you can get 15% off with the code ROXANA15). However, you must consider durability and warranty. Sometimes, paying more up front can turn out to be more affordable in the long run. Ultimately, it’s an investment.
- Hard shell: I’ll be honest, this made me pause. I’m used to stuffing my backpack to impossible levels, so I feared a hard shell would be limiting. Plus, I don’t have all the extra pockets to stuff even more bits and pieces. For now, I’m happy with how spacious it feels, and the durability aspect is a plus. I’ll see how I feel about this after traveling longer with the suitcase.
- Not expandable: This particular model is not expandable, so there’s no way to gain extra space. If you choose this one, you need to keep this in mind. However, Level8 has a few expandable models, like the Adventure Carry-On.

Is the Level8 Luminous Carry-On Worth It?
So, would I purchase the Luminous Carry-On? I’d say yes! Although it’s a bit pricier than other options, I find it durable, stylish, and spacious. Plus, the lifetime warranty gives me peace of mind. And although I enjoyed the practicality of my backpack, I’m happy to carry less weight on my back!
If you’re someone who travels with a carry-on and knows how to pack smart, this suitcase is great. But it’s an ideal choice even if you’re not a slow traveler like me, but enjoy weekend getaways and short trips every now and then.
